Playing Hooky and Patent Medicine

This week we read two of my favorite chapters in Tom Sawyer (I have about 20 favorite chapters).  The first was the scene where Tom feigned illness to avoid going to school.  Not only did he end up having to endure another boring day at school,  but he ended up getting his tooth pulled out by Aunt Polly! 


The other chapter involved Tom's aunt trying to cure his "depression" with a patent medicine.  Tom gets the idea to give this remedy to his cat, Peter,  and the results are hysterical.  Twain writes the following to describe the event: 

Peter was agreeable. So Tom pried his mouth open and poured down the Pain-killer. Peter sprang a couple of yards in the air, and then delivered a war-whoop and set off round and round the room, banging against furniture, upsetting flower-pots, and making general havoc. Next he rose on his hind feet and pranced around, in a frenzy of enjoyment, with his head over his shoulder and his voice proclaiming his unappeasable happiness. Then he went tearing around the house again spreading chaos and destruction in his path. Aunt Polly entered in time to see him throw a few double summersets, deliver a final mighty hurrah, and sail through the open window, carrying the rest of the flower-pots with him. The old lady stood petrified with astonishment, peering over her glasses; Tom lay on the floor expiring with laughter.

I incorporated some non-fiction text with this chapter both on patent medicines, as well as looking at the way the media manipulates and deceives consumers in their advertisements.  Ask your students about the article on weight-loss drugs that we read! 

On another note, our new Chromebooks (thank you parents and Vons for donating to my cause) have come in handy!  This week I was able to save over 1,000 pieces of paper on one assignment for my classes.   Instead, I passed out the assignment digitally, and students typed their responses directly on to the forms.  I so appreciate that my students are so patient with me as I tackle technology.

  1. The thing I liked the most about Tom Sawyer was that Mark Twain uses so much vivid description to make it seem like he was writing a biography on Tom. My favorite part of the book was when Tom and Huck come up with all of these fake superstitions like chanting a spell at midnight in a graveyard with a cat. I think that Mrs. Karney taught Tom Sawyer perfectly and she should change nothing. I also think that she should teach it again next year to all of the incoming students because I think they will really like it.

  2. I enjoyed reading Tom Sawyer in several different ways. I was able to relate to some of the content and really understand what was going on in the book. I thought it was a great story and adventure book. I hope we read more books like this later this semester.

Writing an Essay...with a Partner

I love technology for collaboration! Teaching writing to middle school students is not easy.  All students come with different skills and knowledge.  With 35 students in a class, it's impossible to sit down one on one and assist students with the writing process.  Teaching students to write a literary analysis is particularly challenging because most seventh-graders have little, to no experience.  Students need to learn to  develop a thesis statement, find evidence from the text to support it, provide the context of the selected quotations , and write insightful commentary on the evidence they selected. Remember, these kiddos are twelve! Graphic organizers are particularly helpful to these young writers. The biggest challenge is providing feedback to students as they are writing, rather than after they turn their work in for a grade.  Students need to be able to use the feedback they receive and see the difference it makes in the final product.  I was adamant that I was not go

Hexagonal Thinking

The last few weeks can be challenging. Keeping students engaged and learning is my mission! When I stumbled upon a post about hexagonal thinking, I knew I had to try it with my students. I am SO glad I did. Although this activity can be done digitally or on paper, I insisted that my students in class do it old school. My goal was for my students to have thoughtful discussions about what we read this year. Here's how it works! First, I came up with a list of key characters and ideas from The Giver, Animal Farm, and The Children's Story. I found this awesome generator on line where I could just type in my words, and it put them in the hexagons for me. Then I printed out the pages (there were three) for each group. I did a copious amount of research before embarking on this activity, and I was shocked by the number of teachers who cut the hexagons out for their students. That would have taken me HOURS.
